It takes quite a bit for an owner’s car to grace the pages of any publication in a car-related scene. While it is true that there are many roads one can take in getting their car mentioned in a magazine, all are pretty difficult. An owner could develop his car into a dyno beast, pushing out 1200HP to the wheels while driving it to work every day. Or they could choose to display their mechanical aptitude by doing things such as fitting a Corvette drivetrain into a little Civic. Perhaps the owner would like to take yet another route and attempt to get their car featured by pushing boundaries. After all, the push to hellaflush sexiness was owners pushing the boundaries of how low a car can go while rocking legit kicks. So if one was to judge what Albert Fung was shooting for in his hot magenta R33 GT-R, they would probably claim that he chose the last route and decided to push the boundaries with a vibrant visual attack. But they’d be wrong, for this car’s uniqueness is more than just skin deep.

When Albert purchased his car back in 2006 from the marketing manager of HIN, he formulated a plan of how his future show car was going to be like. Unfortunately, times have changed and with the economy on the down, Albert thought better of the JGTC wide-body, 1000HP build he had in mind. In fact, when the economy took a dump, the poor GT-R found itself sitting in Albert’s garage, hoping and praying that it wasn’t forgotten. Needless to say, when Albert got bit by the bug again, it was time for the plan to be put in action, albeit in a slightly altered way.

Inspecting the GT-R that’s been finished in House of Kolor’s Magic Magenta is akin to inspecting Hyori Lee in a bikini – you just can’t stop staring! The ingredients for this exquisite gawker-attracting car include a Do-Luck body kit that was treated to House of Kolor’s three-stage paint process, completed at DTM Autobody in California. Other subtle changes such as LED taillights act as garnishes for the tastefully finished exterior.

Sliding into the Bride Ergos 2 seats, drivers are greeted with a Personal steering wheel that rests on a Works Bell quick release hub. Takata seat belt harnesses keep the driver in place. Any shifts in the driver’s eyes will result in a barrage of Bride fabric located throughout. The headliner, door panels, center console, shift boot and even the rear seats were completely reupholstered with exclusive Bride fabric. With the rest of the interior looking and feeling racy, a Pioneer head unit keeps Albert entertained while goodies from Blitz including a boost gauge, boost controller and turbo timer allows Albert to extract either maximum performance or maximum efficiency out of his GT-R.

Underneath the hood lies the infamous RB26DETT, which Albert had completely rebuilt with new pistons, rod bearings, cam shafts, oil pump and the like since the car’s history wasn’t as clear as Albert would like. Aftermarket performance parts include a Greddy intercooler which boosts turbo efficiency. Also lending a hand in improving the twin turbo’s potential were HKS wastegate actuators which utilize larger diaphragms, decreasing spool-up time. A Fujitsubo catback exhaust system allows for freer flow of spent gases. Lastly, Albert had the valvetrain ported and polished to remove any gunk and improve the flow entering each of the cylinders.

Car handling was originally reliant on a set of HKS Hipermax II coilovers, but Albert found these to be too rough for daily driving on Chicago’s streets. A call to Top Speed resulted in securing a set of Tein Comfort Sport coilovers, which have helped to keep Albert’s spine intact. The car rests on a set of limited edition 19×9.5 Volk LE28N wheels finished in gloss black, which have been shod in 265/30/19 Falken 452 tires. This setup not only gives the car a nicely lowered stance, but the package offers handling prowess that is widely usable in Chicago’s harsh roads.

While the car seems wild enough as it stands, Albert has plenty of plans for the future. A single-turbo conversion involving goodies from Top Speed’s R34 GT-R including the HKS T04Z and AEM EMS are in the works. Regardless of what the future might hold for Albert’s GT-R, its present state deserves admiration and praise. Despite the extremely loud Magic Magenta exterior, Albert’s car isn’t just a car that has been modified for the sole purpose of making it onto magazine covers and various websites. This GT-R has been perfected into a rare and unique car that can handle Chicago’s rough roads and the twisties while still turning heads. We look forward to seeing how Albert’s project progresses in the next few years as it will surely impress.

Albert would like to give a shoutout to all of those that have helped him with this project: Justin from Another Level, Joey and Mike from Top Speed and Ming from Fizz Autosports have all contributed in perfecting a bright pink gem roaming in Chicago’s streets.

From  the late 60’s to the early 70’s, Toyota was a young company with one mission: build solid cars  to meet social and economic demands. With the help of W. Edwards Deming, Japan rose from the ashes of postwar  mediocrity to achieve a symbiotic balance between quality and cost effectiveness. A prime example of this paradigm shift can be easily recognized when observing  Toyota’s rise in the automotive industry.

During the 1973 Oil Crisis, consumers in the US market began turning to small, efficient cars with better fuel economy. American car manufacturers had considered small economy cars to be an “entry level” product, and their small vehicles employed a low level of quality in order to keep the price low . Thus, the age of the imports began. With a growing customer base and improved reputation, Toyota was finally in a position to increase global market share and take calculated risks. One so called risk was the Toyota MR2.  The MR2 had “family” origins, but the concept of an enjoyable car with decent fuel economy  evolved into one of Japan’s most celebrated sports cars.

By the time Sergey became of driving age, he fell in love the first time he spotted the Toyota SW20 chassis. Having always been interested in rare cars, owning a unique mid-engine vehicle was a natural marriage. However , an interesting phenomenon often discussed on MR2 forums is “MR2 Regret.” Perhaps it shouldn’t be defined  this dramatically, but it can be described simply as selling your prized MR and then later having the urge to come back to it.  Sergey fits this phenomenon to the “T”.  His current ’93 is not only the third MR2 he has owned, but arguably his best. There was a brief moment of infidelity when Sergey picked up a WRX, but as much as he liked the Subie , he knew that the MR2 was his true love .Like most individuals who have a passion for cars, most of Sergey’s free time was consumed with research before and after he picked up his first MR2. Could this be a car he could daily? Was the aftermarket support there?

Having owned three MR2s, Sergey’s experience, hard work and dedication has paid dividends in his current car.  Sergey’s vision and strategy is easily reflected in his build. Sergey’s current MR2 was a naturally aspired factory Super White II model. Although this would have been a dream for any legit MR2 junkie, Sergey couldn’t keep it stock for long.

Sergey wanted to build a complete car that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but performed well in many adverse  conditions. A 3SGTE was a natural upgrade and the paint eventually transformed from white to Macadamia Metallic Paint. And oh, you may notice a hint of blue flake.

It’s hard to believe that his car once pranced around in Chicago’s harsh winters. This is now a thing of the past as Sergey placed much of the focus this year on the body.  Because of his interest for rare parts, it was not easy putting this gem together.
Many tuners make mistakes in car builds, mismatching parts with no flow. This is not the case with Sergey’s MR2.  The Kaminari front lip fits seamlessly with the Border side skirts and rear valences. Working towards the back of the car, one cannot miss the unique Bomex Whale tailwing while a custom rear diffuser and updated taillights adds subtle aggressiveness that finishes off the rear. Other subtle changes on the exterior include shaved moldings, badges, and rolled fenders to accommodate the aggressive wheels .

Obviously not a traditionalist, Sergey went with SSR SP1 Professor wheels with a SBC/Polish finish in 17×9.5 +0 for the front and 18×10.5 -5 in the rear. The Professors are wrapped in stretched 205/40/17 tires up front and 235/35/18 out back. The wheels in combination with a modified set of Apexi N1 coilovers really define this car. It is definitely not a look that Kiichiro Toyoda would have approved of at the factory, but you can bet he would smile at Sergey’s innovation and personal touch. We dare you to find another MR2 with such perfect contours and stance.

If you look at the interior, Sergey made some contemporary upgrades, yet maintained the original design of the MR2. Recaro SR3’s keeps him in check while simultaneously adding style points with reupholstered microfiber inserts. The microfiber was also added to the door panels to finish the look. An OMP Corsica steering wheel are the reins for the car while an Autopower roll bar provides roll protection and increased body rigidity.

From a performance standpoint, Sergey upgraded the factory clutch to a Spec Stage 2.  His power is regulated by an Apexi boost controller, Aussie downpipe, and custom 3″ exhaust by Vinny at his Destruction Warehouse. Stopping duties rely on a MR2 Turbo’s brake system .

With good weather and nice days finally with us, Sergey plans on driving his summer cruiser as often as possible. His car is almost complete, but we bet he’ll go through several more wheels to keep things fresh. For the future, Sergey plans on focusing on the engine bay a tad and possibly  getting some additional power through methanol  injection and/or a larger turbo.  We look forward to seeing Sergey keeping the legacy of the MR2 alive, albeit in his non-traditional way.

News of Japan’s disaster reached nearly every human in a first world country within a day. The footage was horrifying to watch and the toll on human life and property was terrible, but even as Japan went through it’s dark moments that week there was positive mixed with the negative, hope mixed with the despair of a country living through a disaster of epic proportions. Days and weeks after the Tsunami, two facts became very clear about the people of Japan- they would not give up easily, and they would do anything possible to restore the country as quickly as possible and return to normal life.

Speaking to my friends in Japan about those events, I heard one common theme: “let’s not dwell on the bad, but plan for the good. Let’s move forward, rebuild, and enjoy life”. The tuning companies of Japan seemed to express the same feelings and continue to push forward every day. 3D Deisgn’s newest E89 Z4 is a reflection of this positive philosophy. Plans to create the car were made shortly after the Japanese Tsunami with the intention of making a statement. That statement is simply scribed over the car’s driver’s side window: “Don’t give up, Tohoku”.

3D Design partnered with key players in the US and Germany to create their new car, with each company contributing to the car’s unique style. WSTO and IND worked together to design the car’s overall theme and carefully measure the car’s aggressive wheel fitment. BBS brought their amazing Motorsport wheels to the table directly from BMW’s M3 GT4 program in an 18×9.5 +25 size in the front and 18×10 +30 size in the rear. Yokohama supplied the 235/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear S Drive tires. KW helped with their Variant 3 suspension for a comfortable ride on the street and great handling when the roads begin to wind, while Dinan helped provide a camber plate that gave us that extra secret ingredient to make the BBS wheels fit perfectly. Eisenmann’s technicians hand-built the car’s exhaust system for a sound that matches it’s aggressive exterior, and of course 3D Design’s own aerodynamics package in full carbon fiber works perfectly with the car’s already perfect lines. The car will soon receive a brake upgrade from Brembo, a gauge package from Stack, and an upgraded turbo kit from ESS Tuning.
