Patrick Ng’s Toyota Corolla TE27

Although Norcal transplant Ethan Caldwell moved to Chicago several years ago,  he does however make it a point to return home as often as possible. On one particular trip,  Ethan had the privilege of shooting  Patrick Ng’s super clean TE27 for UK based mag Bonzai Mag.  We urge you to check out the mag for the full feature,  but here are some bonus photos we thought you would enjoy.

Patrick Ng took roughly three years to complete this build.  First thing you will notice is the brilliant paint job. After the shell was stripped and minor bodywork completed,  Lamborghini Competition Orange was selected to revitalize the original Toyota orange.

Mechanically,  the Corolla has been freed of its underpowered US-spec 2T-C and been equipped with a larger capacity engine built up form a combination of Toyota T-series engines.  Starting with the long-stroke bottom end from a 1770cc 3T-C,  the block was overbored to accept 89mm TRD pistons,  effectively creating a 1941cc engine.  A pre-emission 2T-GR twin-cam cylinder head was mildly ported and polished before being assembled with TRD valves,  springs and 288/288 duration camshafts.  A pair of Solex 44mm side-draught carburettors tasked with the responsibility of delivering fuel and air in the correct proportions before it’s all ignited by TRD speak plugs.  A rally-spec 4-2-1 exhaust manifold from the Toyota works tuner feeds into a stainless Fujitsubo exhaust.

It’s hard to believe the transformation of this Corolla SR-5.  Patrick took no short-cuts and found original Levin parts in every possible nook and cranny. Japanese-spec Levin parts shows here include grille trim pieces,  lights,  side markers,  wing mirrors,  bonnet vents,  chrome bumpers,  badges,  and even the washer nozzles.  Patrick also managed to unearth a set of Tosco/TRD rally-spec lights for the front end,  just like those used on the race cars from his childhood.

You have to love the MOMO steering with period-correct original TEQ horn button.

What a great road presence-  The RS Watanabe wheels look perfect  with the combined TRD Suspension.

All in all,  Patrick’s TE27 is probably the finest example we have ever seen.  As Ethan described,  “It’s really hard to appreciate the level of detail of this car unless you see it in person.”   The car funtions mostly as a weekend cruiser,  but you may be lucky enough to see it displayed at the next Japanese Nostalgic Car Show.  Congrats Patrick on such a fine restoration and we hope our readers appreciate this car as much as we do!

Retrograph- Fatlace RWB 964

Back in February a few of us went to San Francisco for Wekfest.  Jeremy Cliff was hired to shoot the Fatlace RWB Porsche for Total 911 Magazine.  Of course I tagged along and snapped a few pics as well.  Since the feature has already been published,  here is a quick shot I took while we were there.  If you do spot this car out in the wild,  the Rotiforms have been replaced by SSR Professors.  Click on the pic for a higher res shot.

In the summer of 2011 Jason Kiang was living the good life.  He had a pretty rad TL on Work Meisters,  a sweet downtown apartment,  unsavory friends,  and a dog that loved him.  But then,  tragedy hit…  he decided to buy a BMW.

The 5 series is not exactly a car that one typically chooses to modify.  In fact,  I’m pretty sure the median age of the 5 series is probably 65.
So when Jason told me he wanted an e60,  I really wasn’t sure what to think.  One year later,  I am really happy he decided on this platform.
He visioned a  J-Euro style (European car with Japanese styling cues),   and has executed it flawlessly.

The first thing that stands out on Jason’s 5 series are the Leon Hardiritt Ordens.  Maybe not the typical BMW style wheel,  but the aggressive
offsets suite this car well.  The fronts are sized 20×9 with -5 offsets.  Ride height was adjusted using KW Variant 2 coilovers.

Rears are 20×10.5 +0.  Fender liners? Good luck finding them.  Capping off the rear is an extremely aerodynamic 3D Design trunk spoiler.

Jason chose aero from Prior Design.  Pictured here are their e60 side skirts and rear kit.

The front however was fitted with Prior Design’s E61 Freestyle kit.

The car is pretty much scraping everything at this point.  Jason may add a front skid plate/diffuser to give some protection to the bumper.
Wheel finish is silver/polish with the “shining bright” lip option.  Mevius neon blue wheel bolts tie in with the subtle BMW blue.

Custom Magnaflow tips,  staggered.

The rear valance looks painted black,  but it’s a temporary vinyl application.  Jason liked the look so decided to keep it on.  He’ll paint this section
eventually as we know he’s going to bring the car back to the bodyshop for inevitable repairs.

Quick Sti Snap!

I met up with Nick for this shot of his sti at Six Star Motorsports.  The guys there were super cool and accommodating,  but the location was a tad tight due to other builds and projects in the shop.  In case you’re wondering,  the suby is dressed in a rare Varis x Original Runduce Collaboration Aero Kit.  We’ll be featuring his car again in a few weeks,  but here is a teaser for now.
